The memorial is a sculpture located at Fly Point on the rise of land overlooking Little Beach. The sculpture is inspired by the shape of the tank traps which were used extensively during the Second World War along the shores of Birubi Beach, and recognises the importance of HMAS Assault as a military camp during the Second World War. The memorial was erected by the Port Stephens Historical Society and dedicated by Hugh J Ivory on 28 July 1995 as part of the Australia Remembers campaign 1945-1995.
