This memorial is a large granite rock mounted on a low plinth of stones. It has a plaque attached and is surrounded by paving, shrubs, flowers and rocks. There is bench seating either side of the memorial, and the paving is finished with concrete edging. It is located near the Yarm Gwanga Childcare Centre. Negotiations began in 1989 to create a memorial to those who gave their lives in the Second World War. Professor Dick Stanton donated four scarlet oaks to be planted. Dr Peter Wright organised the plaque and provided the rock. The Chancellor, Dr R.C. Robertson-Cuninghame unveiled the monument. The University of New England was established in 1938 as a University College attached to the University of Sydney. It became the University of New England in 1954.
