The memorial park, along with its bushrock monument and gardens, commemorates Private Maxwell Ray Wales, a member of the 6th Royal Australian Regiment, and seventeen other Australian soldiers who were killed in the Battle of Long Tan in 1966. The Moree Champion on 22 August 1966 published an article titled 'Long Tan Tribute' that described the commemorative service in detail. The park is located on the banks of the Mehi River, west of the Moree Services Club. Notes on veteran: Maxwell Ray Wales was born on 18 April 1944 at Goondiwindi, NSW. He enlisted in the Army and commenced duty in the 6th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment in Vietnam on 8 June 1966. He died in the Battle of Long Tan on 18 August 1966. He was buried in the Church of England portion of the Moree Cemetery.
