The memorial is a large bushrock erected by the local Rotary Club in honour of the memory of the Australian and British soldiers who suffered on the death marches and prison camps at Sandakan and Ranau in North Borneo from 1942-1945, which included some 40 servicemen who came from the Richmond Valley, NSW. The memorial is faced with several plaques which bear the dedication to service and share some of the history of Sandakan. Her Excellency Ms Quentin Bryce AC Governor of the Commonwealth of Australia unveiled the memorial on 27 August 2010.
