Joseph Archibald Lorraine Martin was born in South Grafton and attended Hillgrove Public School. A Methodist grocer, he enlisted at Armidale as a private on 27 October 1915 in the 31st Battalion. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on board HMAT A70 Ballarat. Aged 22 years, he was killed in action on 20 July 1916 at Fleurbaix, France. There is no known grave but he is commemorated on the Australian Cemetery Memorial at Fromelles in France. At the time of his death, his parents Joseph Champion and Mary Jane Martin lived at Taylor Street, Armidale. Joseph was a former Alderman and Mayor of Hillgrove.
