Walcha War Memorial Baths

The swimming pool is a purpose built complex with an Olympic-sized pool. At the front of the property is a brick building containing the entrance and exit gates, change rooms and two aquatic-themed murals painted on the front wall. It was opened by the Hon. Davis Hughes M.L.A., Member for Armidale, on 31 October 1970.  From Walsh, Bob. Walcha and its Schooling, 150 Years. Walcha: Ohio Productions, 2009, 282–284: Particularly after World War Two, the N.S.W. government of the day supported the construction of war memorial pools in developing a policy of water safety. War Memorial Bath Committees were formed and sought assistance from the state and local governments as well as the public. The Armidale Express, 19 July 1963 reported that the District War Memorial Committee was to build baths. The complex was built by the Walcha Shire Council with assistance from local individuals and clubs. The total cost including a water treatment system was £126,000. The local fund raising reached about £22,000 and a subsidy of £20,000 was received from the State Government. The balance came from ratepayer's funds.
