The memorial is a granite obelisk on a red granite plinth on a two-stepped base. It is surrounded by a post and chain fence. El Arish was named after El Arish on the Sinai Peninsula where military hospitals were established during World War I. Additional Information The defeat of the Turks at Romani in August 1916 and at El Arish in December 1916 started a victorious campaign for the Camel Corps and Light Horse under General Harry Chauvel. Since 1921 a Chauvel family home in Stanthorpe has been named El Arish.
