Brass plaque attached to granite boulder, listing a Roll of Honour of South Sea Islanders from the Mackay District who served in the First World War, Second World War, Malaya and Vietnam. Of the 22 names listed two servicemen paid the supreme sacrifice and were killed in action: WWII (1); Vietnam (1). Additional Information South Sea Islanders have fought besides other Australians and suffered the harsh indignities as Prisoners Of War. They have played their part as national servicemen, and paid the supreme sacrifice on the battlefield. On 25th August 1994, the South Sea Islanders were recognised by the Australian Government as a distinctive ethnic group. On the 2nd Anniversary (1996) of that significant event, the memorial was unveiled by the Mackay Deputy Mayor & Charlie Tonga, a Second World War veteran and listed on the memorial.
