Toowoomba The Mothers' Memorial

Memorial was built by mothers to honour their soldier sons who did not return from World War I. The tall column topped by a globe and wreath rises from a many-sided block carrying names of service personnel from Toowoomba, Yalangur, Westbrook, Wyreema, Gowrie Junctions (now known as Gowrie Junction) and Meringandan. The column is 8m (26.25') high. Names of Corporal John French VC and Matron Anne Jewell, lost on the Centaur, are on this memorial. The sides of the memorial are covered with name plaques, listing 409 World War I names for Toowoomba, including 1 nurse and 1 doctor; 6 names for Yalangur; 10 names for Westbrook; 9 names for Wyreema; 5 names for the Boer War, 4 names for Gowrie Junction and 5 names for Meringandan. There are 251 names listed for World War II, including 1 Victoria Cross; 1 DFC & MC; 3 DFC; 1 BEM, 1 MBE, 1 DSC; 1 AFC, 1 Matron and 2 Sisters. There are 6 names listed for Korea War 1951-1953; and 6 names for Vietnam, including 2 M.I.D. Additional Information Relocated to East Creek Park, Margaret Street, in October 1985.
