Memorial Obelisk, within the Thursday Island Cemetery boundary, that commemorates the individuals who died whilst in service of the Thursday Island Garrison. The Roll of Honour lists 8 men, with the first commemoration occuring on 1 November 1884. The obelisk is carved and along with the pedestals, displays twin draped flags, an artillery gun, and scroll. Additional Information The memorial is dedicated to the soldiers of the Victoria Garrison who lost their lives while serving at Green Hill Fort, Thursday Island 1893-1917. The Green Hill fort was built in 1893 to provide for the protection of the island and it s coaling station which was vital in both times of peace and hostility. Thursday Island is located between Australian and Europe and thus was strategically important.
