The memorial is a timber garden bench with a plaque attached. The plaque is inscribed with a dedication to Sgt. Andrew Russell who was killed in action in Afghanistan on 16 February 2002. It is located in the north-eastern corner of Walcha Anzac Memorial Park, near the Walcha and District War Memorial. It is positioned next to a similar memorial bench for Lt. Michael Housden Fussell. The memorial was designed by Walcha Shire Council, the Royal Australian Engineers and the Walcha Lions Club. It was donated by 2 Troop 1 Field, Royal Australian Engineers and the Walcha Lions Club. Sgt. Russell enlisted in the Australian Army on 26 November 1986. He completed his basic recruiting training at Kapooka and then joined the Royal Australian Engineer Corps. He was deployed on several postings overseas, including Iraq (1997), Kuwait (1998), East Timor (1899-2000) and Afghanistan (2002).
