This war memorial is a granite column mounted on a single plinth, with attached white marble plaques. Originally for the First World War, additional marble plaques have been added for the Second World War. Bronze plaques have also been added for Korea, Malaya-Borneo, Vietnam and Peacekeeping. In 1920, the Ulmarra Returned Soldiers League sought to perpetuate the memory of Ulmarra soldiers with a suitable soldiers' memorial (The Grafton Argus and Clarence River General Advertiser, 12 April 1920). Permission was granted to the Returned Soldiers and Sailors Imperial League (RSSIL) by the Minister of Local Government in 1924 (Daily Examiner, Grafton, 18 January 1924). The memorial unveiling ceremony took place on 27 April 1924, with Mr F. J. Yalden, president of the Ulmarra branch of the RSSIL, presiding over the ceremony. Addresses were also given by Mr J. R. Campbell, patron of the RSSIL, Alderman Hoade, on behalf of the Mayor, Major Beale and ministers of religion. The memorial was unveiled by mothers of the deceased soldiers and sailors (Daily Examiner, Grafton, 28 April 1924). The memorial is located in Ulmarra Memorial Park. Commemorative services take place on site. Notes on veterans' names: No records for deceased veterans from this area with the following names can be found: W Corrigan, C Davis, E D Cox, C H Hooker, E McLucas, W McLucas, A J Shea, H J Sinclair, F Anderson, J W Knox, G Pratt. Their status codes have been given as Killed in Action (KIA), as indicated by the memorial. C H Hooker may be George Harold Hooker who died of disease (DOD). E McLucas may be Eric Francis John MacLucas who DOD. W McLucas may be Urban Robert Roy MacLucas who was KIA. G Pratt may be Garnett Pratt who was accidentally killed. All other status codes are taken from information in the Australian War Memorial Roll of Honour, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission database, the World War Two Nominal Roll, and the National Archives of Australia. It should be noted F Keat died in Australia, thus his wounds may have been accidental. On the memorial, M Menyweather is given as M Mennyweather and M J Watkins may be given as M I Watkins.
